The confluence

ORIGINALLY POSTED on Facebook, June 22, 2009

Finally, a poem. It's been MONTHS. This one overtook me like a wave...like an instruction. I've written others similarly themed, but never about this person. I am officially moved.

“The confluence”

Tonight
as I type your data
I listen to piano-voice-guitar-echo music
spiny and ethereal at once
it reachesmmmme to you
suddenlymma cloud bridge
vapors of familiarity
lost only to time
we are bloodmmmeven though you are not flesh
we are blood
and so I love you
arrière-arrière-grand-père de Lowell
faceless to me
too poor for photography
but in this mist
this swirl of song
I see you
and you approve
because
you want to be known
to linger at the edges
of our mindsmmmyour descendants
your successes
your leavings
I embrace air
so that I may hold you here
I transcribe your years
and I own you
